Police are appealing for information about the whereabouts of 65 fishing rods stolen from an outdoor activities centre near Romsey.

The incident occurred overnight on Monday July 12 in Green Lane, Ampfield. Offenders forced entry to the premises stealing around £20,000 worth of property including a laptop, a Blackberry mobile phone, approximately 65 fishing rods and other fishing equipment. PC Keith Walsh said: “This is a small business which operates on a non-profit basis to provide activities for disengaged children and their families. “I would urge anyone with information about this incident or the whereabouts of the stolen property to contact the police. “I would also like to hear from anyone who is approached and offered a fishing rod for sale as this may be stolen property.”

Ellouise Hurle, of Mercer Way, in Cupernham, will taking up the junior princess’s role. Ellouise is 10 and a pupil at Romsey Primary School.

Each princess was given £30 in prize money. All three will be crowned at the start of the summer carnival week on Saturday, July 24, in Romsey’s War Memorial Park. Jack O'Lantern Garage History

A brief history of the Jack O'Lantern garage (and restaurant) when it was taken over in the 1950's by the Classic cars business mentioned below.

Excerpts taken from Rick Fords website at http://www.rick-ford.co.uk/

This business was run by F.G. Wade-Palmer and Richard (Rick) Ford.

The garage was purchased, it bore the name Jack o' Lantern and this was retained. The gravel forecourt with wooden canopy was bare and unwelcoming. It was decided that vintage cars would do well as decoration and hopefully generate some much needed income. The very first car was a Rolls-Bentley BLT 988, a fine sports saloon but so rickety in the joints that any sharp braking would cause the wind-screen to fall out. Those were the days!

In 1961, rumours circulated in Hampshire of major road redesigns for the county. These included the upgrading of the main A31 (A3090) road heading for the sea-side resort of Bournemouth, the very road which passed the Jack o' Lantern. The making of this, into a dual-carriageway would seriously impact the business.

The site was sold and the business, reduced in size, was transferred to suitable (?) premises in Romsey centre. The Old Jam Factory, was a warren of wooden buildings behind an historical High-street building, all very highly inflammable but more importantly vacant, with much covered, barn like storage. There was indeed a fire late one night but the miscreants forgot that Romsey Fire Station was only just around the corner and was serviced by a fire crew of exceptional efficiency. Although the listed building was seriously damaged and had to be demolished, (mission accomplished ?), the wooden sheds and dozens of Rolls-Royce cars were saved.

Serial burglary offenders

Officers from the Western Operational Command Unit, covering the boroughs of Test Valley and Eastleigh and the New Forest district, have been working to bring serial dwelling burglary offenders to justice. The OCU currently has the lowest dwelling burglary rate for the whole of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

There are approximately 165,000 households in the area and during April, May and June there were only 180 burglaries which equates to less than two per day.

Dwelling burglary is down by a massive 33% compared to the same period last year.  Read More

The air of Woodley Close is full of House Martins at the moment and when they are not catching insects in flight they are busy repairing last years nests. Many of their mud houses can be seen under the eaves of houses and flats. Stuart Thorpe managed to get a picture of a couple seen busy at work. Click photo to big it  up.
